There is a corner of Bavaria where the modern world completely fades away, replaced by jagged Alpine peaks, mystical lakes, and scenery that looks like it was pulled straight from a storybook. Most people come here exclusively for the world-famous cliffside architecture, but to me, while the castle is of course the gem of the area, the real fairytale magic is down by the water.
The Magic of the Alpsee and Nearby Lakes
The true soul of this region lies in its spectacular, pristine waters. The beautiful Alpsee is just a magical place. If you are visiting in the warmer months, you can actually swim right in its crystal-clear water with wild swans floating everywhere around you. It is incredibly peaceful, quiet, and feels completely untouched by the rush of the world.

If you venture just a little further out into the region, you’ll find Bannwaldsee. It is another absolutely beautiful spot, featuring a lovely beach area that makes for a really nice, relaxing place to spread out a blanket and enjoy the mountain views.

The Real Story Behind Neuschwanstein Castle

When you do look up past the water, you see Neuschwanstein Castle, the global icon that inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. Built in the late 19th century, Neuschwanstein was the brainchild of King Ludwig II, often referred to as “Mad King Ludwig.”
Shied away from the realities of politics, Ludwig poured his personal fortune into creating a private theatrical dream world inspired by grand German myths. Ironically, the king who desperately sought isolation only spent about 172 nights living in his dream palace before he died mysteriously in 1886. Seven weeks later, his ultimate hiding spot was opened to the public, turning a reclusive king’s refuge into a global bucket-list destination.
Unwinding at the AMERON Resort

To soak in the lakeside atmosphere after the day-trippers leave, I stayed right near the water at the AMERON Neuschwanstein Alpsee Resort & Spa.
The hotel is a nice place to stay, the rooms are a little outdated but it offers a decent spa and breakfast. What makes it truly special is how they let you experience the surrounding nature. The resort features a beautiful natural lawn area right by the water. My favorite ritual was visiting the hotel spa to unwind, and then heading out to sit in the lawn chairs. Sitting there with a glass of champagne, looking out over the beautiful, still view of the Alpsee, is pure bliss.
And the magic doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. At night, Hohenschwangau Castle—which sits directly across the way from the AMERON Hotel—is completely lit up. Watching that stunning, illuminated golden castle glow against the night sky and reflect across the dark water is an experience I will never forget.

My Practical Tips for Your Trip
If you are planning your own escape to this Bavarian wonderland, here is my best advice for making the most of it:
- Arrive without expectations: Don’t over-schedule every second or stress about a rigid plan. The best way to experience this area is to just go with the flow and let the magic happen.
- Beat the crowds to the castle: If you want to head up to Neuschwanstein, go early in the morning. The mid-day tour crowds can take away from the atmosphere, so getting an early start is key.
- Don’t skip Mary’s Bridge (Marienbrücke): When you are up by the castle, you absolutely have to walk across the high pedestrian bridge suspended over the gorge. Walking across it is amazing, and it gives you the most spectacular, breathtaking views to take photos of the castle, the lake, and the entire surrounding landscape.
- Pack your own picnic: Before you head out for the day, put together a DIY picnic basket. Taking your own food and drinks to enjoy on the beach by Bannwaldsee is the perfect, relaxing way to spend an afternoon away from the busy tourist hubs.

This looks really intriguing 🫰🏻
